The Woodshed Oracle

Five paths. Five questions. Five moments we all eventually meet.

The Five Paths did not begin because I decided one day that the world needed another oracle deck.

They began as an idea I carried with me for years.

An idea about those moments in life when we find ourselves standing somewhere unfamiliar, sometimes without even realizing how we arrived there.

There are times when we need to protect what matters. Times when we need to see the truth clearly. Times when we need to recognize what has already been placed before us. Times when we need to retreat into the quiet. And times when we simply have to accept that the road beneath our feet has changed.

Over the years, those moments slowly became something more.

Eventually, they became five Paths.

The Shield.
The Sword.
The Grail.
The Cave.
The Crossing.

And after carrying them around in my head for a very long time, I finally found a way to bring them to life here in the Woodshed.

WHERE THE FIVE PATHS BEGAN

There are three old loves of mine woven deeply into The Five Paths.

The runes. Tarot. And the legends of Arthur, Merlyn and Avalon.

I've had a deep love for the old runes for years. Not simply as symbols carved into wood, but for the history, meanings and stories behind them. I've spent countless hours learning them, working with them and trying to understand what they were meant to say long before they ever found their way into something made in my Woodshed.

There is something about a simple mark carved into wood or stone carrying an idea across centuries that has always fascinated me.

I also have a great respect for Tarot.

What has always interested me most isn't the idea that a card must somehow tell us exactly what will happen tomorrow. It's that an image placed in front of us can make us stop.

Look again. Ask a question we weren't asking five minutes earlier.

Sometimes an image doesn't give us an answer at all. Sometimes it simply helps us recognize the answer we already knew.

And then there is Arthur. Merlyn. Avalon.

Those stories have had their hooks in me for about as long as I can remember.

The old wizard. The sword. The Grail. The mist surrounding Avalon.

The caves, forests, crossings and ancient roads that seem to exist somewhere between history, legend and imagination.

I've never needed every part of those stories to be proven true to find truth within them.

What has always mattered to me is what survived inside the stories.

The choices. The journeys.

The moments when someone must decide whether to stand their ground, seek the truth, accept what has been placed before them, disappear into the quiet for a while, or finally cross into whatever waits next.

Somewhere along the way, those three loves began finding one another.

The runes gave The Five Paths their roots.

Tarot helped inspire the idea of an image becoming a doorway to reflection.

And the legends of Arthur, Merlyn and Avalon gave the Paths a world to walk through.

But I didn't want to recreate any of them. I wanted to make something of my own.

Something simpler.

Something you could hold in your hands when life puts you at one of those strange crossroads and ask:

Where am I standing right now?

Five answers eventually emerged.

And The Five Paths were born.

THE SHIELD

Protection • Boundaries • What Matters

There are moments when the road forward begins by standing still.

The Shield asks us to consider what deserves our protection.

Our time. Our energy. Our home. Our peace. The people and things we hold close.

It also asks another question that can sometimes be harder to answer:

What have I allowed too close?

The Shield is not about hiding from the world. It is about understanding that boundaries can protect what we need without becoming walls that prevent us from living. Sometimes,  the next step begins by deciding what belongs inside the circle.

THE SWORD

Truth • Clarity • Decision

Not every sword is drawn for battle. Sometimes its purpose is simply to cut through what has become tangled. The Sword is the Path of clarity.

It asks us to look beyond the noise, the excuses and sometimes even the stories we've been telling ourselves.

What remains when everything unnecessary is cut away? What do you already know?

There are moments when the hardest part isn't finding the truth.

It's admitting that we've already found it.

THE GRAIL

Abundance • Receiving • What Has Found You

We spend a great deal of our lives searching. Searching for opportunity. Searching for purpose. Searching for something that feels like it belongs to us.

But the Grail asks us to stop searching for a moment and look at what is already sitting before us.

What has found its way into your life?

What have you been given that you haven't fully recognized?

And maybe most importantly:

Are you willing to receive it?

The Grail reminds us that abundance isn't always something waiting somewhere farther down the road.

Sometimes it has already arrived.

THE CAVE

Renewal • Reflection • The Quiet Within

Not every Path leads forward. Some lead inward.

The Cave is the quiet Path.

It appears when the noise of the outside world has become louder than the voice within us. There are times when retreat is not surrender. Rest is not failure. Stillness is not wasted time. Sometimes we need to step away from the road long enough to remember why we were walking it in the first place.

The Cave asks us to enter the quiet willingly.

Not to remain there forever.

But to emerge carrying something we couldn't hear before.

THE CROSSING

Journey • Change • What Comes Next

Eventually, something changes. Sometimes we choose it. Sometimes it chooses us.

The Crossing appears when one shore is behind us and another waits somewhere ahead.

We may not know exactly where the road leads. We may not even know who we'll be when we reach the other side.

The Crossing doesn't promise certainty.

It simply reminds us that there are moments when remaining where we are is no longer the Path.

Sometimes we have to cross.

WHY FIVE?

Five has followed me for most of my life.

I was born in the fifth month.

Long before The Five Paths existed, the Five Sacred Elements had already found their place in the Woodshed:

Earth.
Air.
Fire.
Water.
Spirit.

Maybe it's coincidence. Maybe some numbers simply keep appearing until we finally pay attention.

Either way, once this idea finally began taking shape, there could never have been four Paths.

And there were never going to be six.

There were five.

MADE IN THE WOODSHED

The first Five Paths were not sent away to be manufactured.

They were made here.

Each Path began as an idea and became an image designed specifically to live on wood.

The original wooden cards were individually laser engraved, cut, sanded and finished by hand in the Woodshed. By me.

The grain changes. The burns change. The edges change.

And I wouldn't want it any other way. Their imperfections belong to them.

Alongside the Paths grew their companion book, eventually becoming more than seventy pages exploring their meanings, influences, combinations and ways of working with them.

Those pages are printed here and aged by hand.

And from the same world came the Woodshed talisman, an original piece created to travel alongside the Five Paths.

None of this was meant to feel like something that had just rolled off an assembly line.

I wanted the first time someone held The Five Paths to feel almost as though they had discovered something. Something carried. Something worn. Something that maybe had a life before finding its way into their hands.

THERE IS NO SIXTH PATH

The Five Paths were never intended to answer every question for you.

They aren't supposed to. They aren't here to tell you what to think. They are here to make you stop long enough to think. To look at where you are. To recognize what kind of moment you may be standing in.

Maybe you need the protection of The Shield.

Does something need the clarity of The Sword?

Perhaps The Grail is asking you to recognize what has already arrived.

Or is The Cave telling you that it's time to become quiet?

Or one day you reach The Crossing, and somewhere inside you already know it's time to move.

Five Paths.

No sixth answer waiting to rescue us from choosing among them.

Sometimes the Path itself is enough.

THE FIRST FIVE

The Five Paths will first leave the Woodshed in a way that feels appropriate.

Five sets.

No more.

Each built, aged and finished by hand here in the Woodshed.

What happens after those first five find their caretakers?

Right now, I honestly don't know.

These take time to make.

And I think some things deserve the chance to find their own road before we decide where they should go next.

Whatever happens afterward, those first five will always represent where this journey began.

The Shield.
The Sword.
The Grail.
The Cave.
The Crossing.

Five Paths.

And somewhere among them... maybe one is already calling your name.
